“Warrior, strap your sword at your thigh…”
Have you ever experienced a situation where you forgot your identity in Christ? Where the shock of the moment steals not only your breath, but also your mind? This was me last August, when my husband was taken by ambulance to the ER. What we thought was a typical food- poisoning episode with vomiting and fever was in reality a life-threatening intestinal blockage.
The shock of the diagnosis stole my breath and quieted my prayers.
After two days of a very painful, but unsuccessful vacuum hose procedure, my husband’s situation was becoming dire. It appeared that risky, and possibly life-altering, abdominal surgery was the only option. It was at this moment of stress when the Lord reminded me of my identity in Him.
I returned home from the hospital to check on our house and decided to watch a mind-numbing flick to relax. One of my favorites, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, was on, so I settled down on the recliner for a much-needed mental break. Surprisingly, as I was watching the scene where a weighty sword is handed to Aragorn (the main character), I heard the Lord whisper in my spirit, “Pay attention!” I sat up straight in the chair, re-wound the scene and focused on what was said as the sword was handed to Aragorn–“The man who can wield the power of this sword can summon to him an army more deadly than any that walks this earth!”
Immediately, I knew in my spirit that the Lord was telling me to get back into His Word. It was time to wield the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17). The scene continued with Aragorn accepting the sword along with his birthright as heir of the king—he came into agreement with his identity and accepted who he was born to be. Again, I heard the Lord whisper, “Pay attention! This is what it looks like to believe you are an heir of God!” Wow. I never knew a movie could deliver such profound teaching on identity, but it was exactly what I needed in that moment. I was His heir, and it was time for me to act like it!
“The Spirit himself bears witness with our own spirits that we are children of God; and if we are children, then we are also heirs, heirs of God and joint-heirs with the Messiah…” ~ Romans 8:16-17 CJB
The next morning, as I sat with the Lord in prayer, contemplating the message from the movie, the Holy Spirit led me to Psalm 45. Verse 3 jumped off the page as I read it aloud:
“Warrior, strap your sword at your thigh; [gird on] your splendor and majesty.” ~ Psalm 45:3 CJB
I knew exactly what I needed to do. It was time to fight like a warrior for my husband! I jumped up from the kitchen table and declared in a loud voice, “I am a daughter of God! I am an heir of God, and co-heir with Jesus! In the name of Jesus, I declare healing in my husband’s body and I command that foreign object in his intestine to be dislodged now!” For several minutes, I stomped around my kitchen table—a warrior wielding her sword, loudly decreeing, and declaring God’s Word in the name of Jesus. I strongly felt the atmosphere shift and wondered if angels had truly been released to perform His Word (Psalm 103:20).
Twenty-four hours later, the victory was confirmed. When I walked into my husband’s hospital room, I found him sitting up in bed without the vacuum hose! When I asked what had happened, my husband shared that he had fallen into a deep sleep the night before, and upon awakening, had found the vacuum hose neatly lying on his lap! The dislodged hose caused a commotion amongst the doctors and nurses, as my husband vigorously denied removing it himself. To summarize the victory story, my husband was discharged the next day—the intestinal blockage was removed, and he was completely healed.
This testimony is one of my memorial stones. Like Brenda’s memorial stone #10, we are all “Daughters of the Right Hand.” Regardless of life’s circumstances, let us always remember and declare who we are — warriors for the King who wield the power of His Word, in Jesus’ mighty name.
