A Step Beyond Disappointment

So now that we’ve addressed our disappointment with God, do you mind if we take a step further?

Let’s talk about anger…I know. I know. I didn’t want to either, but let’s do it together.

But before we do that, let me give you context…

As I mentioned last week, in 2024, I wrestled with disappointment a lot. I realized that part of that wrestle was my inability to deal with my emotions healthily. A friend had told me about Dr. Anita Phillips’s book called The Garden Within several months earlier. Towards the end of the year, I knew it was time to read her book. It was time to figure out how to handle this emotional business.

I began reading with highlighter, pen and tabs in hand. I marked, nodded, and amened until I got to page 52. On this page begins a section titled, “Anger: The Stony Soil”. By the time I finished that section, I wanted to throw the book at the wall (not in a good way – if you know, you know) because the Holy Spirit whispered to me, “You’re angry.” My immediate response was, “No, I’m not!” But my physical reaction of wanting to throw the book betrayed my knee jerk denial. Then He added, “You’re angry at God.” Friends, I crumbled. Me, who have prided myself on being “in control” — I was angry at God. But how did I get here? The way Dr. Phillips explained it summed up what I had been going through.

“When something blocks us from getting what we want or achieving what we set out to do, we call that goal frustration. Frustration is a form of anger that blends annoyance and disappointment. The disappointment is important to recognize because it explains why frustration skyrockets when hope evaporates”. (Phillips 2023, 52)

I had received all these promises and prayed all these prayers that I had not yet seen the manifestation to, so I was frustrated with God. I was also disappointed because I kept thinking, “You’re all powerful. Why don’t you just grant me these things I’m asking and the things You have promised!” But I would quickly bury those thoughts and act like they didn’t exist. Each got its special box that got buried in my “I’m Good with God Graveyard.”

But on January 6, 2025, the Holy Spirit asked me if I was ready to start confronting this anger. I wasn’t ready, but I did. We dug up those boxes, took each item out, and I listed all the areas I was angry with God about. Then I cried and cried and cried. Then I wrote some more. It took about 5 days for me to get to a place where I felt remotely normal again. It didn’t feel great, but it was a necessary cleansing.

Friend, has your disappointment with God led to anger? If so, have you expressed that anger to Him?

If you’re anything like I was and you were never given permission to express your emotions, I want you to know that God can take it. God wants to hear it from you. And if you thought you were hiding it from Him, you’re not. After all, He is omniscient.

Brenda Savanhu Author of Memorial Stones Fighting through Distraction Truthfully, writing for today’s post was a slog. I had to fight through one particular distraction all day. It wasn’t the kind where I could simply turn off my phone or put on headphones. No, this distraction literally manifested in my body. It took me a while to put a finger on it. Eventually, when I took a moment to be still Holy Spirit told me what it was. But the solution He told me to apply also took time. That…

Praise Him

Brenda Savanhu Author of Memorial Stones Praise Him I can’t shake it. For weeks, I’ve heard ” Praise Me” from the Lord. Prayer requests? “Praise Me.” Prayers answered? “Praise Me.” Navigating a challenge? “Praise Me.” In despair? “Praise Me.” Therefore, I won’t take time today to share. Instead, I invite you to spend the next few minutes praising the Lord. No matter where you are or what is happening in your life, join me in thanking and praising Him. Don’t know where to start? How about…
